Makole Maponya, Mahlako a Phahla Investments and WIPHOLD Non- Executive Director

Makole Maponya, born in South Africa, is the founder and Executive Director of Mahlako a Phahla Investments, a women led company focused on Energy and Infrastructure space.

Mahlako a Phahla currently holds investments in two Solar Projects and is involved in developing Wind Power Stations.

Prior to joining Mahlako a Phahla, Maponya was the Portfolio Manager of Old Mutual Infrastructure Development and Environmental Asset (IDEAS) Fund for 6 years.

While at Old Mutual Investment Group, Maponya was also involved in the managing of the Africa Infrastructure Fund and the South African Infrastructure Fund.

The Funds invest in typical Infrastructure Projects as well as Public Private Partnerships.

Maponya has been involved in some landmark deals in the South Africa Infrastructure space, which included the first accomodation Public Private Partnership, the DTI building; one of the two Private Prisons, the Bloemfontein Prison.

Maponya was part of the team that took over Kelvin Power Station and implemented its turnaround Strategy.

Maponya is also involved in the Department of Energy’s Renewable Programme both on the Wind and Solar side.

Maponya served her articles at Investec Bank where she spent her final year of articles focusing on Private Equity.

Maponya has also been involved with Nation’s Capital, a Corporate Finance advisory company that successfully advised Government on the privatisation of Aventura Resorts.

Besides her directorship of WIPHOLD, Maponya is also an alternate director for the Financial Service Board Directorate of Market Abuse, representing the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) on the board.

Maponya is also a trustee of the Telkom Foundation and Foodbank Foundation.

Maponya is part of the core team of DNA Wind, a company that is involved in developing wind energy power stations for the DOE Renewables Programme.

She is a member of SAICA, African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA) and the Institute of Directors (IOD).

Maponya is a qualified Chartered Accountant.
