Linah Mohohlo, Governor of the Bank of Botswana

Linah Mohohlo served as Executive Officer of The Diamond Trading Company.

Mohohlo has played a key role in one of Africa’s most successful economies as governor of Botswana’s central bank since 1999.

Mohohlo became governor in 1999 after 23 years with the bank and service with the International Monetary Fund in Washington. She sits on the boards of several major companies in Botswana. Mohohlo serves as the Chairman and Governor at Bank of Botswana.

Mohohlo joined the Bank of Botswana in 1976 and has served in it a number of capacities, including Board Secretary, Deputy Director of Research, Director of the Financial Market Department and Deputy Governor.

Mohohlo has also worked for the International Monetary Fund in the African Department and the Monetary and Exchange Affairs Department.

Mohohlo serves as Director of Debswana Diamond Company Pty Ltd.

Mohohlo is a member of the Board of Directors of Botswana Diamond Valuing Company, Air Botswana, UB Foundation Board and the Botswana Institute of Development Policy Analysis.

Kofi Annan, then secretary-general of the United Nations, appointed Mohohlo as Eminent Person in 2001 to oversee the evaluation of the United Nations New Agenda for the Development of Africa. She is a member of Tony Blair’s Commission for Africa and of the Africa Emerging Markets Forum.

Mohohlo has received many awards, including The Banker Magazine’s Central Bank Governor of the Year (2001) for Africa and the Middle East, Euromoney’s Emerging Markets Central Bank Governor of the Year for Sub-Saharan Africa (2003), Presidential Order of Honour 2004 (Botswana’s highest public service award), African Times Africa Leadership Award (2007) and African Banker’s Banking Regulator of the Year (2007).

Mohohlo holds a Bachelors Degree in Economics from George Washington University, Washington DC, a Masters Degree in Finance and Investment from University of Exeter, UK and a Diploma in Accounting and Business Studies from the University of Botswana.
