Irene Charnley, Smile Telecoms Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Irene Charnley, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Smile Telecoms Holdings Limited.

In addition, Charnley is a social entrepreneur and widely respected telecoms visionary who was instrumental in transforming MTN into one of the most respected telecommunications operators in the Europe and Middle East Africa (EMEA) region.

Charnley served as Commercial Director of Strategic Investments of MTN Group, a subsidiary of Johnnic Holdings Ltd, since August 2001 and an Executive Director from August 2001 to June 2006.

Charnley served as an Executive Director of Johnnic Communications Ltd. since February 1997.

Charnley served as Head of Telecommunications of ElementOne Limited. She served as Head of Telecommunications of Johnnic Communications.

Charnley serves as Chairperson and Executive Director of M-Cell Limited.

Charnley serves as Chairperson of Orbicom, MTN Network Solutions, Mobile Telephone Networks Holdings, Airborn and Member of the King Committee on Corporate Governance.

She served as Chairperson of South African Broadcasting Corporation since July 2009.

Charnley was also influential in obtaining one of three cellular licenses in Nigeria.

Charnley has been a Director of Metropolitan Life Ltd. since 2001.

Charnley is also Director of MTN, Orbicom, MTN Cameroon and Electronic Media Network Limited.

Charnley served as an Executive Director of ElementOne Limited since February 1997 and served as Director of Johnnic Holdings Limited from November 1996 to September 2003.

She served as a Director of Metropolitan Holdings, formerly New Africa Capital Group Ltd from 2001 to December 2004.

Charnley served as a Director of Johnnic Holdings since November 1996.

Charnley served as Member of Board of Directors of MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd.

Charnley was awarded Business Woman of the year in 2000 and nominated as one of the top 50 businesswomen outside of the USA by Fortune Magazine.

Charnley is also an Institute of Retirement Funds councilor and a member of the Pensions Advisory Board which advises South African Finance Minister Trevor Manuel on policy issues.
